One panel damaged? Don't panic.
A homeowner notices a crack in one panel after a storm, or sees the monthly generation drop, and assumes the worst: the whole rooftop plant has to be redone. It almost never comes to that. A solar system is modular by design, and the sensible response is a diagnosis before any replacement.
Signs worth investigating
- Generation noticeably below the same month last year
- An error or warning on the inverter display or monitoring app
- Visible cracks, chipped glass, or a shattered panel after hail or debris
- Brown or discoloured patches on the cells, which can indicate hot spots
- Moisture or condensation visible inside the laminate
- A scorched or discoloured mark near the junction box or a connector
What a proper diagnosis involves
The aim is to find out whether the panel is genuinely faulty, and whether it is the cause or the symptom.
- Read the inverter logs. Error history and per-string data often point straight to the affected section.
- Measure string voltage and current. Comparing strings shows whether one is underperforming.
- Inspect visually. Glass, frame, backsheet, and junction box on every panel, not just the obvious one.
- Check the connectors. MC4 connectors and cable insulation are a frequent culprit, especially after years of sun and rain.
- Verify earthing and protection. Isolators, breakers, and surge protection can trip or degrade and mimic a panel fault.
- Thermal imaging, where needed. This reveals hot spots that are invisible to the eye.
What the problem often turns out to be
In a good share of the "my panel is damaged" calls we attend, the panel is fine. The real cause is something simpler:
- Accumulated dust, bird droppings, or leaf litter reducing output
- New shade from a tree that has grown, or a neighbouring structure that has gone up
- A loose or corroded MC4 connector
- A tripped DC isolator or breaker
- An inverter fault or a monitoring connection that has dropped, so generation looks worse than it is
Each of these is far cheaper to fix than a panel, and none of them require touching the rest of the array.
If a panel does need replacing
Two things matter. First, the replacement should be electrically compatible with the others in that string — a badly matched panel drags the string down toward its own output, so you lose more than one panel's worth of generation. Second, check the warranty position before buying anything: if the panel is within its product warranty and the failure is a manufacturing defect, the claim may cover it. Keep your original invoice, panel serial numbers, and installation documents, since manufacturers ask for them.
Safety note: a solar array is live whenever there is daylight, even with the inverter switched off. Cracked glass and damaged wiring should be inspected by a technician rather than handled yourself.
Prevention costs less than repair
Most of the faults above announce themselves gradually.
