Is Installing Solar Panels Worth It in Chennai in 2026?
It depends on the bill, the shade, and whether the quote is a complete plant. A payback year is not printed until the terrace is seen.
Read the article →Solar panels cut a Chennai electricity bill by covering a share of what the house uses while the sun is up. Those units never appear as a purchase from TANGEDCO. After sunset the EB line still supplies the home. You do not give up the connection, and you do not get a zero bill as a slogan.
The drop that matters is the daytime pattern on your own statements, not a kilowatt number in an advertisement. Export, once a net meter is in place, is generally worth less to you than the units you avoid buying in the afternoon. That is the order the visit follows: the bill, then the shade, then the size that fits.
A typical home plant here is grid-tied. Through the day the panels serve the house first. If the fridge, the fans, and an air conditioner are already running, solar is used at the point of generation. If the house is using less than the array is making, surplus can go out through a net meter. If a cloud or a heavy load outruns the panels, the grid makes up the difference. Night is still the EB line, as it is now. That arrangement is explained in going solar does not mean giving up your EB connection.
Read a year of statements if you can. Note the units, not only the rupee total, because tariff slabs move. A house that runs an air conditioner through the afternoon, or has someone at home on weekdays, uses solar while it is being generated. A house that is empty from morning to night, and only loads the meter after dark, will export more and avoid less. Those are different bills, even on the same roof.
A zero bill is not the test. Night load remains. Monsoon weeks remain. A plant sized for the useful roof, not for every appliance at once, will still leave units on the meter. We do not print a payback year on this page.
As a planning figure, one kilowatt of well-installed, unshaded rooftop solar in Chennai produces roughly four to four and a half units a day, averaged across the year. April is not December, and a monsoon week is not a clear week in February. Heat matters too. Modules on a terrace lose some output as they warm up, so a datasheet wattage is not the units you will see at 2pm in May.
Two air conditioners do not automatically mean a 2 kW plant. Capacity comes from the units you already use while the sun is up, and from the unshaded area that can hold the rows. How capacity is decided walks through that arithmetic. Shade from a tank, a stair cover, or a neighbour’s wall can cut a row after mid-afternoon. A large array in shade for three hours often disappoints more than a smaller array on a clear patch.
Whether that plant is worth putting up at all still depends on the bill and the shade. That test is in whether installing solar is worth it in Chennai. The system type is a later choice. Most houses that already have an EB connection stay on-grid. That inverter switches off during a power cut, so the lights go off with the street. Backup is a battery decision, covered in on-grid, off-grid, and hybrid.
Dirty glass, a loose connector, or an app that has been offline for a month can undo part of the daytime drop you paid for. Rain washes loose dust. It does not replace a clean. When clear-day output is sliding, that is a service question, not a new kilowatt. What a service visit covers is the later reading of the same roof.
The papers belong next to the hardware. A plant that generates but is not metered properly does not show up on the bill the way the quote described. The net meter is applied for, inspected, and changed on the utility’s timetable. Generation for the home can be explained at handover. Export, and the way the bill is presented, follow the meter change.
Eligible homeowners can receive a government subsidy of up to ₹78,000 when the modules are DCR and the file is approved. Amount and approval follow current scheme rules. That assistance is not a discount already printed on every quote. If a price only looks attractive because it assumes the subsidy, ask to see the subsidy as its own line. DCR modules are required for that central assistance. NDCR can look cheaper only if you give the subsidy up — the comparison is in NDCR vs DCR solar panels.
A complete plant names the modules, the inverter, the structure, the cable, the earthing, the testing, and who stays for commissioning. How to compare solar quotes is the checklist. A figure that hides the structure or treats the subsidy as money already in the account is not a bill-saving plan.
A full plant is written after a free visit. It is not a rate per panel, and it is not printed here. If you already own the modules and the inverter, labour for fitting that equipment starts at ₹3,000 per kW. The equipment, the structure steel, the cables, and the papers sit outside that labour figure.
The visit is free and does not commit you. Bring a recent electricity bill, and a year of statements if you have them. We look at roof area, the tank, the parapet, the stair, how the modules will be carried up, and where the cables can come down. Shade is measured on the terrace. From the Madipakkam office we install across Chennai. The same team that surveys the roof is the team you can call after switch-on.
They cover a share of the units the house uses while the sun is up, so those units are not bought from TANGEDCO. After sunset the EB line still supplies the home. Export, once a net meter is in place, is generally worth less than the daytime units you avoid.
Not as a rule. Night load, monsoon weeks, and a plant that is smaller than the bill all leave units on the meter. A zero bill is not a promise we print. The drop that belongs to your roof is written after a free visit.
No. Units the house uses while the panels are generating matter more than surplus sent to the grid. A house empty until evening will export more and avoid less, even on the same roof.

Bring a recent statement. We’ll say what daytime units the roof can cover before a figure is written.
